The opening round of the 2012 West Cork Masters Cup sponsored by Bernard Hayes Travel, Cork began on Wednesday night with two ties down for decision writes Ger McCarthy.
Drinagh Rangers 1 Dunmanway Town 0
2011 Cup winners Dunmanway Town were knocked out of this year's tournament by local rivals Drinagh Rangers following an evenly fought encounter in Canon Crowley Park. The Mohona club relinquished the trophy they won the previous summer to solitary strike from Colm McCarthy. The sides were level at the interval following an uneventful opening 30 minutes until Rangers stepped up the tempo at the start of the second period and took control of proceedings.
Mike Doolan setup Danny O'Driscoll for a shot that cannoned back off the crossbar before Martin Cronin brought the best out of impressive Dunmanway goalkeeper Richie Collins twice in as many minutes. Town's heroic defending looked set to take the first round tie to extra time before Drinagh grabbed a late winner with just 2 minutes remaining. Danny O'Driscoll's pin-point centre was glanced home by Colm McCarthy to seal a 1-0 victory and book a place in the last eight of the competition at home to either Skibbereen or Ardfield. Dunmanway Town will enter the West Cork Masters Shield and despite the defeat, enjoyed fine performances from Fachtna Collins, John Collins, Joe O'Donnell and Richie Collins. J.J. Hurley, Shane O'Neill and Kieran Hourihane were best for Rangers.
Cloughduv Celtic 7 Bunratty United 0
Cloughduv Celtic powered their way into the quarter-finals of the West Cork Masters Cup following a comprehensive defeat of Bunratty United in Cloughduv. Donal Collins led his side to victory with a well taken hat-trick while Martin McCarthy netted a brace. Bunratty's disappointing night was compounded by a missed penalty in the second half before Cloughduv completed their total courtesy of Dermot Crowley and Joe Madden strikes.
Credit to Bunratty United for never throwing in the towel and travelling such a long distance to complete the cup tie. The Schull based club now enter the West Cork Masters Shield tournament and had Denis Murphy, Ray Kingston and Terence O'Reilly in fine form despite the heavy loss. Cloughduv will fancy their chances in this year's cup if Wednesday night's performance is anything to go by and can look forward to another home tie in the last eight against Clonakilty AFC. Best for Celtic on the night included Barry Cullinane, Donal Collins and Martin McCarthy.
