Round 5 of the West Cork Masters League sponsored by O'Brien's Bar Rosscarbery is scheduled to be completed this week with some important matches at both ends of the table writes Ger McCarthy.
Mon June 25th - Ardfield 2 Rosscarbery 2
Monday night football came to Carrigroe on June 25th with an earlier than usual weekly match-up between two sides struggling for form in the West Cork Masters League. Both sides had nothing to lose following an indifferent start to the campaign so a cracking local derby developed and produced four goals before the full time whistle. Paul McShane fired the hosts into an early lead courtesy fo a fine long range effort only for Geoff Wycherley to equalise shortly before the interval. There was still nothing to choose between two committed sides as the second period progressed until Rosscarbery's Enda Favier was brought down in the area and Michael Keohane converted the resulting spot-kick to fire push the visitors 2-1 in front. A rip-roaring encounter produced a second equaliser when Ardfield's top scorer Diarmuid 'Super' Keohane netted from yet another penalty to earn his side a share of the spoils. Rosscarbery were delighted to pick up a long overdue first point of the season thanks to the efforts of Donal Santry, Enda Favier, Noel O'Donoghue and Peter Hayes. Ardfield's best players included Steve Frost, Bernard Hayes, Noel O'Donovan and Pearse O'Sullivan.
Wed June 27th
Castletown Celtic vs. Bunratty United
Castletown Celtic can close the gap on the West Cork Masters League leaders with a home victory over Bunratty United on Wednesday evening. Celtic remain unbeaten after three league fixtures whilst Bunratty are coming off a heavy defeat to Cloughduv Celtic in the first round of the West Cork Masters Cup. Castletown will look to top scorer Joe Gallagher for inspiration once again on Wednesday night while United will hope Ger O'Donovan, Bryan O'Regan and Ray Kingston can find the net to elevate the Schull club into the top half of the table.
Clonakilty AFC vs. Courtmacsherry
The only two sides yet to register a point in this summer's League clash in Ballyvackey with Clonakilty AFC hosting fellow strugglers Courtmacsherry. Tom Houlihan registered Clon's first goal of the campaign in a 5-1 defeat to Drinagh last time out while Courtmacsherry lost by a similar score to Castletown on the same evening with Norman Fleming netting his side's only goal to date.An evenly fought encounter is expected between two attacking sides desperate to get off the bottom of the table.
Clonakilty Town vs. Cloughduv Celtic
No doubting the match of the week takes place in Darrara where defending Champions Cloughduv Celtic will be anxious to close the gap on undefeated Clonakilty Town at the summit of the standings. Celtic's 2-2 recent draw with Ardfield dented their title hopes but a 7-0 defeat of Bunratty in the Cup suggests the Cloughduv club are bang in form once again. Clon Town have won all four fixtures to date and never finished outside the top two positions in the league so a cracking game is keenly anticipated.
Dunmanway Town vs. Drinagh Rangers
Dunmanway and Drinagh lock horns for the second time in as many weeks with the title-chasing Canon Crowley Park club looking for a repeat of their narrow 1-0 win over Dunmanway in the cup last Wednesday. A local derby between these two sides is always one to savour but Drinagh have yet to lose a game this summer suggesting Dunmanway will need to produce their best performance of the season to get anything out of the fixture. Should be a fascinating encounter.
