The second round of West Cork Masters League fixtures sponsored by O'Brien's Bar Rosscarbery continued this past week with five fixtures spread across three days writes Ger McCarthy.
Drinagh Rangers 2 Rosscarbery 0
Drinagh Rangers and Rosscarbery began Round2 of the West
Cork Masters League with a re-arranged fixture in Canon Crowley Park on Monday
evening. An even first half ended scoreless with Ross’s Sean Hearne seeing an effort
rattle the upright. Hearne went close once again just after the restart before
Drinagh took control of proceedings. The home side had two efforts hacked off the
line by Denis McSweeney before J.J. Hurley reacted quickest to a rebound to
fire Rangers in front. Mike Doolan setup Liam Curran for his second goal in as
many games just before the end to seal a 2-0 Drinagh victory. Best for Drinagh included J.J Hurley, Alan Shorten and Liam Curran while Denis McSweeney, Noel O'Donoghue and Sean Hearne stood out for Rosscarbery. That’s two wins
out of two for Drinagh Rangers who have the look of title contenders while
Rosscarbery are still searching for their first points of the campaign.
Ardfield 0 Bunratty United 2
On Tuesday night Ardfield hosted Bunratty United in Carrigroe
with the hosts hoping to build on their encouraging win over Dunmanway the previous
week. The visitors had other ideas however and took the lead early on when Ger
O’Donovan sprung the Ardfield offside trap before racing clear to slot home the
opener. Ardfield pressed hard for a leveller until a marvellous individual goal
from Bryan Regan doubled Bunratty’s lead 10 minutes into the second period. TJ
O’Donovan rounded off a memorable night for the visitors by saving an Ardfield
penalty to ensure Bunratty recorded their maiden victory of the 2012 campaign
by running our deserved 2-0 winners thanks to the standout efforts of Nick Cole, Cathal Heapes and Peter Duggan.
Wednesday night saw the three remaining Round2 Fixtures
completed starting with Clonakilty Town overcoming the dogged challenge of
Courtmacsherry 3-0 in Darrara. Karl Kurowski marked his debut for the home side
with a close range finish to break the deadlock. Courtmacsherry came close to an
equaliser when Paul Smith crashed a header against the upright but Town held
out to change ends 1-0 ahead. A second Kurowski effort doubled Clonakilty’s
lead midway through the second half before Malcolm Harte capped an impressive
individual display with a fine left foot finish to cement a 3-0 victory.
Clonakilty Town maintain their 100% start to the season and on current form
look certain to be involved in the title shakeup while Courtmacsherry must travel
to Dunmanway in Round3 still looking for their first points of the campaign. Karl Kurowski, Mike Hurley and Jason Kidney impressed for Clonakilty Town with Norman Fleming, Declan Hennessey and Paul Smith the standout performers for Courtmacsherry.
The Mohona based club lost for the second time in as many
weeks with defending champions Cloughduv Celtic running our 3-1 winners in
Cloughduv on Wednesday night. It was scoreless at the break with both defences cancelling
one another out before Cathal Crowley broke free to fire the visitors in front.
Cloughduv refused to panic and quickly equalised through Clement Doyle’s first
goal of the season before Paddy Doherty pushed the home side 2-1 ahead. A superb
John O’Shea header secured Cloughduv’s second consecutive victory and the
champions are not going to give up their title without a fight this term.Dan Buckley, Dermot Crowley and Cathal Hughes stood out for Cloughduv while Kieran O'Leary, Kevin Hurley and Cathal Crowley best for Dunmanway Town.
Castletown Celtic made their summer debut away to Skibbereen
in the Baltimore Road on Wednesday night and came away with a hard earned point
following a tough encounter. Both sides were reduced to 10 men before the
fixture was completed but it was Castletown who got off the mark first with
John McGillicuddy netting Celtic’s first goal of the campaign. Skibbereen are
always difficult to beat on their home pitch and grabbed a deserved equaliser through
a Ger Murray goal after 55 minutes. There was no further scoring so it ended
1-1 with both sides having to be content with a share of the spoils. Paudie Aherne, Sean Fleming and John O'Sullivan were the pick of Castletown's best performers while Skibbereen enjoyed standout displays from Ger Murray, Pat Connolly and Mick Hurley.
