Adverse weather conditions seriously affected the lastest round of West Cork Masters League fixtures sponsored by O'Brien's Bar Rosscarbery writes Ger McCarthy.
CASTLETOWN GO SECOND
Clonakilty AFC 0 Castletown Celtic 2
The only West Cork Masters League fixture to survive the weather took place in a rain-sodden Ballyvackey where Castletown Celtic moved into outright second position courtesy of a 2-0 win over Clonakilty AFC. Dan Bailey netted his fifth goal of the summer to hand Castletown a 1-0 lead but the visitors were fortunate to reach the break with their lead intact after Lorne Edmead missed a penalty for Clonakilty AFC.
The second half was barely 10 minutes old when Francis O'Callaghan scored a second for Castletown to secure his side's sixth win of the campaign and move Celtic within four points of leaders Drinagh Rangers. Despite the 2-0 loss, Clonakilty AFC produced a battling display and were unlucky not to get on the score-sheet having hit both the post and crossbar. Best for the hosts included Chris Connors and Chris McCarthy while Mark Hilliard, John McGillicuddy and Dan Bailey stood out for Castletown Celtic.
ROUND-UP
Clonakilty Town were unable to field a team for their scheduled trip to Schull to face Bunratty United thus handing their opponents and automatic 3 points and third place in the standings. Two matches that fell victim to the weather included Courtmachserry vs. Ardfield and Dunmanway Town vs. Skibbereen. Both fixtures were awarded as draws as neither result would have affected the top end of the table.
The most eaglery anticipated match of the season between current champions Cloughduv Celtic and champions-in-waiting Drinagh Rangers had to be postponed because of the weather. Naturally, this fixture will be re-fixed for a later date with Rangers requiring only a point to secure the title.
Focus now switches to next week's West Cork Masters Cup and Shield semi-finals. In the last four of the Cup Skibbereen entertain Cloughduv Celtic in the Baltimore Road while Clonakilty Town and Rosscarbery clash in a local derby in Darrara. The Shield semi-finals areDunmanway Town vs. Courtmacsherry in Mohona and Ardfield vs. Bunratty United in Carrigroe.
A full preview of all four semi-final ties is published in this week's edition of the Southern Star newspaper.
