DOOLAN MAGIC PUSHES DRINAGH CLOSER TO TITLE
Drinagh Rangers 1 Clonakilty Town 0
Drinagh Rangers moved a step closer to winning their first
ever West Cork Masters League title following a titanic battle with Clonakilty
Town at Canon Crowley Park. The two age-old rivals served up a terrific
encounter with little to choose between the sides until a moment of magic from
Mike Doolan shortly before the break. Doolan gained possession 25 yards from
goal and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner of the net for the
matches’ only goal. Clonakilty Town dominated much of the second half but
couldn’t find the net despite a succession of attacks. Both goalkeepers pulled
off some terrific stops during a frantic finale but Drinagh held on for their
eighth consecutive victory. The Canon Crowley Park club just need to avoid
defeat at home to Cloughduv Celtic next week to be crowned 2012 Masters League
champions. Best for Drinagh included Liam Curran, Mike Doolan and William O’Donovan
with Diarmuid O'Sullivan, Diarmuid Hayes and Kevin Kingston the pick of
Clonakilty’s best performers.
CASTLETOWN UP TO SECOND AFTER FINE WIN
Ardfield 0 Castletown Celtic 3
Castletown Celtic’s 3-0 defeat of Ardfield in Carrigroe
elevated the visiting side into second place in the standings and cemented
their status as the most improved team in the Masters League this summer. Ardfield
enjoyed the brighter start with John Lawless rattling the crossbar and Noel O’Donovan
seeing his goalbound effort cleared off the line. The hosts were made to pay
for their profligacy in front of goal when Joe Gallagher latched onto a through
ball and made no mistake with a neat finish. 1-0 became 2-0 shortly afterwards
when Dan Bailey stooped to head home an in-swinging free-kick. Castletown Celtic
wrapped up a convincing victory when Joe Gallagher netted his second of the evening
after some poor Ardfield defending to earn the visitors their fifth win of the campaign.
Damian Dooley, Peter Gough and Gary Smith stood out for Ardfield while John
McGillicuddy, Padraig Condon and Gordon Anderson were outstanding for
Castletown.
BRAVE CLONAKILTY HOLD BUNRATTY
Clonakilty AFC 1 Bunratty United 1
Bunratty United’s recent run of impressive form was halted
in Ballyvackey on Wednesday evening when Clonakilty AFC held the Schull based club
to a surprise 1-1 draw. The sides were scoreless at the end of the opening half
dominated by United before Denis Murphy eventually breached the Clonakilty
rearguard with an assured finish. Stand-in goalkeeper Lorne Edmead produced a
series of excellent saves and inspired the hosts to push forward in the closing
stages. Adey Arericos grabbed the all important goal late on for Clonakilty AFC
to secure the Ballyvackey side’s second point of the campaign. Adey Arericos,
Kruzzy Ayalla and Lorne Edmead impressed for Clonakilty while Denis Murphy, Joel
Davis and Jeremy Brosnan stood out for Bunratty.
COURTMAC EARN DESERVED POINT AT THE EXPENSE OF ROSS
Courtmacsherry 1 Rosscarbery 1
Courtmacsherry and Rosscarbery played out an entertaining
1-1 draw on Wednesday night. The home side grabbed a first half lead through a
well taken Martin Curran effort who took advantage of some slack Ross defending.
The visitors were missing a host of first team regulars but produced a much
improved second half display which culminated in a deserved equaliser. Ross
shook the Courtmac upright before Sean Hearne finished off a flowing move with
a cracking finish to ties the game at one apiece. Rosscarbery enjoyed the better
finish but couldn’t convert a succession of chances and had to settle for a point.
Paul O’Callaghan, Paul Smith and Pawel Hejaz caught the eye for Courtmacsherry
with Noel O O’Donoghue, Sean Linehan, Geoff Wycherley and Damian Murphy on top
form for Rosscarbery.
